Sports Physiotherapy
Sports physiotherapy is a specialty within the field of physio-
therapy. The main focus is on the rehabilitation of a musculoskeletal
injury sustained by an athlete or physically active individual.
The technical advancements in the rehabilitation of sports
injuries have increased dramatically over the past several
years. With today's increased attention to physical fitness
and wellness among all age groups, combined with the emphasis
to manage rehabilitative care more effectively and efficiently,
it is essential to utilize those technical advances to provide
a complete program of rehabilitation.
Sports Physiotherapy, which includes manual therapy and electrical
modalities, helps to reduce the pain, muscle spasm and inflammation.
Once the symptoms of the acute injuries are settled, rehabilitation
can be started. A comprehensive rehabilitation program which
aims as restoring the normal range of motion and muscular
function in the body, correcting any biomechanical factors
that place increased stress on the particular body part, is
essential in preventing recurrence of injuries.
Rehabilitation exercises which include stretching exercises,
strengthening exercises, proprioceptive training or special
programs such as “Lumbar stabilisation training”
“Shoulder stabilisation training”, “Pilates
home program”, “mediBall exercise program”
can be part of the rehabilitation program to achieve these
goals.
Sports physiotherapists have basic physical therapy training.
But they should also have additional training in the prevention
and care of athletic injuries. Many sports physiotherapists
are also certified strength and conditioning specialists who
possess the knowledge and skills needed to design and implement
safe and effective strength and conditioning programs for
athletes in a team setting and physically active individuals.
